I’ve been sewing like crazy this week making my costumes for Burning Man. Or maybe I should say outfits, but costumes sounds more fun. Now, for people who have gone before, I know these are a little tame, maybe you could even say conservative, but I’ve never been and I didn’t want to overdo it. Still, plenty of sequins, plenty of ruffles, and very light and airy material so I don’t sweat to death in the 105 degree heat.
First, my favorite outfit:
Made from vintage slips, worn with bloomers made from a tshirt, and a close up:
Then some flashier stuff:
Looks sort of like a Catholic school uniform, but with sequins? It’s Made from an American Apparel tank, sequin top, a pink skirt and some nail heads. And:
Chain mail top from Allison, my neighbor, and a sequin skirt I made. Next:
Made from a sequin tank top, sequin black stretch material, and salvaged satin. Finally:
Made from a vintage bathing suit, a blouse and vintage trim
And a close up of the necklace I’m wearing:
Made from strands of beads, pearls, hardware store chain, and gold and silver chains
Finally, not really a Burning Man “costume” but a gift for my friend that is letting me stay with his camp:
Modeled by the amazing Daniel Ajl Kitrosser, made from a “vintage” Brett Favre Packer tee from the good old days
I know there’s only 5 outfits, and I’m going for 7 days, but I plan on trading my outfits for other outfits the next two days, stopping by the “Kostume Kult” camp to pick up a costume, and checking out the “Burning Man boutique” where they just hand out clothes to anyone. Sounds soooooo cool.
One other thing: Let me know if you’d like a post card, I hear I HAVE to stop by the Burning Man post office because the “employees” there are a trip. So I’ll be making my way there.
Email me if you’re going and want to meet up there! I’ll be at the Volcano Worshippers camp, come say hi!

I’ve never been to Spain and I barely speak any Spanish, but I’m full-on obsessed with Spain winning the World Cup on Sunday. I just finished my dress that I’m going to wear- it took me a few hours but I really wanted to get that crest as detailed as I could. It’s made from a recycled yellow tank top, a red spandex dress, and lots of scrap fabric and patches and buttons.

My friend Joe’s blog has the tagline: “If you can’t be a good example, you have an obligation to be a horrible warning.” I try to model my life after it, and I think I set a pretty good example. Really! Here are two girls who saw my website, got some ideas, and decided to make their own tie skirts. It makes me so happy when my designs inspire others to recycle!

Nice job, ladies. Come to New York and model in my next fashion show?
Happy Earth Day from AuH2O! I have a very busy day today, I’m speaking at Gallatin’s Dean’s Council meeting about what I do and my participation with Gallatin’s Eco-Fashion Week to Gallatin alums, friends, donors and parents from 10-12 and then from 12-2 I’m participating in NYU’s Earth Week Street Fair. But that’s not it!
Last week, AuH2O and TEICH had a fashion show and clothing swap to kick off Earth Week, Sunday, April 18, 2010. Models wore AuH2O, Ryann, TEICH handbags, the Andean Collection jewelry and Charmone shoes down the sidewalk runway. Then we had a free clothing swap- everyone went home with “new” clothes. See photos below, or check my flickr set, Earth Week Kick Off ‘10, or facebook album for more.

Jill Filipovic in AuH2O, dress made from a “Grease” baseball jersey
Leanne Linsky in AuH2O, dress made from an old CBGB’s tank
Note: That’s me in the background, I finally got to watch a show! It was so fun! Andrej Platoni, husband to model Rachel Kay-Platoni stepped up as not only a star photographer, but also made a video:
See the videos of the Ryann show here and the TEICH show here.
And finally, people swapping clothes and finding “new” stuff!
That’s it! Hope you have a great Earth Day!
And check back in the next day or so for a post about “East Fifth Bliss” and one of my dresses bought and worn by Lucy Liu in the film! (Sneak preview, see my twitter: twitter.com/kategoldwater)
This Sunday, April 18th, join AuH2O and TEICH as we kick off earth week with a fashion show at 5pm and clothing swap immediately after at 5:30. This Earth Week Kick-off party will be outside our stores on 84 E. 7th street b/t 1st and 2nd. Free and open to the public!

Plus, refreshments will be served!
This event is weather permitting! If it’s raining, we’ll cancel. But it better not rain!
HUGE NEWS! THE BIGGEST NEWS EVER! LADY GAGA stopped into AuH2O to do some shopping! LADY GAGA! At AuH2O! Turns out the pop and fashion icon, and my HERO, has taken an interest in green fashion! SO SHE CAME TO MY STORE! She knows that she has such an influence on the fashion world, and that going green is more important than ever, and that if she gets on board, designers that want to dress her and her fans that look up to her will get on board too. Eco-fashion is the future, and so is Lady Gaga, so it makes perfect sense. Anyway, here’s the photo below of Lady Gaga and me at my shop:
Needless to say, April Fools. That was photo-shopped, poorly. Unfortunately, Lady Gaga is not YET interested in green fashion or wearing AuH2O’s eco-friendly clothing. Also, she’s in Australia now, little monsters. But did I get you? For just a split second? I did, didn’t I?
How can skiing be eco-friendly? By buying vintage, of course! I bought some skis on Craigslist for $29, as you can tell they’re from 1986, and I got the poles for an additional $10. Poles don’t match, but are roughly the same size and color scheme…
Then my boyfriend bought us some vintage ski suits from eBay, $15/each:

Just wanted to share! Ebay and Craigslist are GREAT for inexpensive vintage finds!
Kate embodies fashion as innovation, as do the other designers whose products she carries. A trip to AuH20 inevitably gives the shopper not only several fantastic, one-of-a-kind pieces your friends will envy, but a new outlook on style and what it means to wear something ‘new.’
And again, includes a slideshow of AuH2O as well as my designs, often modeled by Rachel at one of my many shows. Thanks Rachel!
One more thing! My friend Semir Chouaibi interviewed me for the German Fashion and Lifestyle Blog SuperStrudel, here’s a taste:
What do you like about fashion and how would you describe your own style?
Kate: I think fashion is the best form of self expression. Before I even open up my mouth people can see from my appearance that I’m unique, I’m creative, I care about the environment, or I support Obama, or that I’m Pro-Choice. In general, fashion just makes life more fun. It’s something to look at – people’s outfits are walking works of art – constant stimulation.
