I’ve never been to Spain and I barely speak any Spanish, but I’m full-on obsessed with Spain winning the World Cup on Sunday. I just finished my dress that I’m going to wear- it took me a few hours but I really wanted to get that crest as detailed as I could. It’s made from a recycled yellow tank top, a red spandex dress, and lots of scrap fabric and patches and buttons.

After I painted my World Cup nails with ten different teams, my friend slash nemesis told me I was a traitor and that I should have every nail be the American flag. I promised that once we got to the knockout round, I’d do it, so Matt Clark, these are for you:
pre-painting: nail polish and fake nails all lined up
painting the flags and soccer balls- I do two sets for when I lose a nail playing soccer… seriously it happened last night
Final product: Thumbs up USA!
I’m going to wear these with my USA dress on Saturday for the big game against Ghana! GO USA!

JUNE 23RD UPDATE: HECK YEAH USA! I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! I’m doing the nerdy little “Number 1″ sign, since, well, we were number one in our group for the first time in 80 years. Needless to say, I will be wearing this dress Saturday when we play Ghana, and I’m changing my DIY World Cup nails to ALL USA flag nails.
GO USA! USA USA USA!
Just finished my USA dress to wear to watch the World Cup tomorrow morning. USA better win because I want to wear this dress again! Numerous times!
It was made from a vintage salsa dress and a blue American Apparel leotard donated from friends, salvaged lace trim, and a military eagle patch. Recycling, fashion and the World Cup, all in one dress.

The other day, my friend Melanie buzzed this refinery29 link showing an amazing salon, Wah Nails, that’s doing World Cup team manicures. I’m pretty into the World Cup - I’m in four different pools, I’m addicted to my ESPN/FIFA app, and I’ve even caught the second halves of the 7:30am games. I love the World Cup, and even more, I love, love, LOVE showing my support for the team with my appearance- see previous Mets dresses, Obama tops, and Health Care Reform fashion, so I decided I had to give myself these World Cup nails. Here’s the process, and the final product:
I used real paint brushes, now they’re ruined. Also, this process took nearly 2 hours. Worth it!
From left to right, top: USA, the Netherlands, Spain, Mexico, Japan
bottom: South Africa, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria
All lined up. Do not confuse the Netherlands with France. I AM NOT CHEERING FOR FRANCE.
Finished product!
Bad Romance with World Cup nails. I love to pose like Lady Gaga… see below:
Brazil versus Spain in the finals! I’m cheering for Spain - despite their loss today
So, there’s my World Cup spirit. Stay tuned for another post on my USA dress. And I know these nails don’t have anything to do with AuH2O or eco-fashion, but hey, if my store doesn’t work out, I may have a career in nail art…

My friend Joe’s blog has the tagline: “If you can’t be a good example, you have an obligation to be a horrible warning.” I try to model my life after it, and I think I set a pretty good example. Really! Here are two girls who saw my website, got some ideas, and decided to make their own tie skirts. It makes me so happy when my designs inspire others to recycle!
Hannah (age 10, Lynchburg, VA)
Isabella (age 6, Boca Raton, FL)
Nice job, ladies. Come to New York and model in my next fashion show?
…AuH2O won’t be putting on a “regular” fashion show like I usually do during Fashion Week. This year, I’m participating in Gallatin’s first ever Eco-Fashion Week. (Gallatin is the make-up-your-own-major college at NYU where I went to school.) There will be several events, and the full schedule can be found here: http://www.nyu.edu/gallatin/news/2009/12/ecofashion.html. Flier below:

Another Holiday shopping event since Hanukkah’s coming up in just a few days!
A new store recently opened by students of Parsons, Absolute Beginners, is having an event on Friday called the 50 Dollar Bill Event. Everything in the store will be exactly $50- and featuring work by several designers, including AuH2O. See flier and info below:
Absolute Beginners 50 Dollar Bill Event:
When: This Friday,7 to 11pm
Where: 616 E 9th St (between Avenue B and C)
What: Absolute Beginners invited their favorite designers and friends to make a line of $50 products. It’ll be an excellent opportunity to discover unique, local designers in a fun and accessible environment - plus get some Christmas shopping done! EVERYTHING in the store will be on sale for $50.
And since I have several friends who are a part of Absolute Beginners, I want to plug one more of their events. Next Monday AB is hosting Memento Amouri, a show featuring my favorite intern Alexa Stark:
Check out my very good friends’ documentary: Klein Pictures “What Are We Doing Here?”
Four years ago, the four of us (Brandon, Nicholas, Daniel and Tim Klein) set out to cross the continent of Africa hoping to make a film that would challenge, entertain and inspire. After six months of filming, a year and half of editing, and two years of film festivals, TV appearances and University screenings, we are happy to finally announce the DVD release of “What are we doing here?” This controversial documentary investigates why after 50 years of Western involvement, billions of dollars in foreign assistance and countless promises, Africa is still so poor.
And finally, check out the WAM! (Women, Action, and Media) bidding for good auction. WAM! is an organization dedicated to building a robust, effective, inclusive movement for gender justice in media that is transforming into an independent, national non-profit. Click here for more info, and HERE to bid on the goods, like getting Margaret Cho to take photos for you, or a guitar signed by Ani DiFranco.
More info on WAM!, why I love it, and why it needs to be a national non-profit:
Every day, WAM!mers help each other place op-eds and articles, get powerful media jobs, leverage new technology, hold the media accountable, produce and promote books, films, and other projects, get stories told about our lives and work, and change the very structure of the media itself.
In the next two years, we can launch thriving local WAM! chapters in major cities across the country, which will foster on the grassroots level the kind of cutting-edge thought and action WAM! already inspires nationally. We can build an engaged online WAM! community through monthly webinars on timely topics, a brand-new WAM! website designed to foster action, and of course, our ever-flourishing listserv. And we can ensure that the next WAM! conference is the largest and most influential yet, creating an unstoppable force for gender justice that will change the media landscape for good.
So go bid for WAM!
And hope to see you Friday at the Absolute Beginners $50 Event!
Since the last swap at AuH2O and TEICH was so successful, we decided to have another! Come Thursday, Oct. 29th to swap out your old clothes and go home with new ones. You can also bring old Halloween costumes or pieces of costumes to recycle, and people can find things to use for this year’s costume. ALSO, my mom will be in town, and she’ll be there! Details:
What: Clothing and Accessories Swap
Halloween-related stuff especially encouraged (but not necessary)
Bring at least 1 item of clothing that you no longer wear, but would be proud to pass on
$3 suggested donation
Where: AuH2O and TEICH, 84 E. 7th Street
When: Thursday, Oct. 29th, 6pm-8pm
WHO: AuH2O and TEICH and Amy Goldwater
Hope you can come! And speaking of Halloween, I already made my costume, duh. Halloween is my favorite holiday! I’m going as Jean Grey as the Phoenix from X-Men. Who doesn’t want to be a superhero? I made this out of shiny green and gold spandex, it’s a one-piece full-on body suit:
It’s modeled after this photo below, and now I just need to dye my hair red…
As I’ve noted several times on this blog and on the internet (such as twitter, or facebook) I broke my collarbone almost two months ago playing soccer. Read this post for the full story. I had a LOT of medical bills, so my neighbor Allison at TEICH and I are having a clothing swap tomorrow night at my store! Here’s the details:
Tomorrow! Wednesday, August 12, at the store (84 E. 7th St. b/t 1st and 2nd ave.) Time: 6-8pm
-Bring at least 1 item of clothing that you no longer wear, but would be proud to pass on (no old tees, or stained/damaged clothes, please). Go home with new clothes!
-Accessories welcome
-Refreshments will be served
-$5 suggested donation. Proceeds go to help me pay my medical expenses from breaking my collarbone, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Hope to see you tomorrow night!
Because I couldn’t move my arm at all AT ALL in the past few weeks, I haven’t been able to write about all the things happening in AuH2O land. To start with, right before I broke it (June 21st, 7 weeks and 2 days ago, but who’s counting?) CNN came by to do another shoot on the store. No idea when that will air yet, but I’ll keep you posted! My friend Maria from Sexy Sustainable Style also came by to do a little shoot about the store for her own blog. She’s written some very nice things about AuH2O on her blog, check it out her account of the filming with CNN or her post about the June 11th Fashion Show, which she enjoyed:
“I was thrilled to see that her clothes are designed for women with REAL bodies – curves - or as Fergie says, “lovely lady lumps.” I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that Goldwater’s hand-sewn clothes don’t cost a fortune even though her last name might imply otherwise.”
Also, one of my customer-friends wrote about AuH2O for Dossier Journal, NBD. Well, actually, it’s kind of a BD. Here’s Dana Varon’s piece on AuH2O and Teich: Ponds and Goldwater.
Finally, a fellow Milwaukee native turned New Yorker, Mz. Lady Yvette, stopped into my shop one day last summer. We got along really well and realized we were both from the Ill-Mil (Milwaukee, and alright, no one actually calls it that) like ten minutes away from each other AND she almost went to NYU. Anyway, since then, she’s started a fashion blog and recently wrote a really nice post on AuH2O. Check it out here: Mz. Lady Yvette Presents: Gold + Water.
Also, as Mz. Lady notes in her post’s P.S., I’m participating in an art/fashion exhibit called TRASHION at Gallery 151, 350 Bowery at Bond Street. I wasn’t able to make any new pieces for it, but my classic MetroCard Dress is on display there. It’s open until August 21st, so if you’re in the East Village between 1-6 on Wednesday through Sunday, stop by and see the creative recycled works of the artists and designers. More info at: gallery151.com
And finally, my friend Jesse Ash won a Webby Award (yeah buddy!) and asked me to make him an eco-friendly tie for the ceremony, which is basically the Oscars of the web video world. He won the IADAS judged Webby Award and the People’s Voice Award at the 2009 Webby Awards, the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. He won for his short, “Magical Cure,” that he made for Greener Media. Greener Media is a multimedia production company that has made a commitment to produce environmentally and socially conscious media, and also to begin taking steps to lessen the footprint of our production process. To learn about their greener practices, click here. To learn about their services, click here.
Oh, and Jesse is not only a Webby Award winning filmmaker, he’s also my friend who made the “Fashion for Change” video that was a finalist for CNN’s iReport. He also made my AuH2O Design of the Week videos that I haven’t exactly been posting weekly, but here’s a few, and check my youtube channel for more:

I feel like I might be all caught up with everything now. Hope to see you tomorrow night at the swap!
Here’s photos of AuH2O at the Swap-a-Palooza. Apologies for the delay in posting, I’ve been awfully busy opening up the new shop! Anyway, NYU hosted a Swap-a-Palooza on Sunday, April 26th. People traded in old clothes for new clothes, learned how to sew, silk screen, and alter clothing with the help of several talented designers and friends of mine- Kae Burke and Tara McNamarus of Make Fun! and Tiffany Threadgould of Replayground. AuH2O hosted the fashion show at 5pm, and here’s some photos below. See more in my flickr album:

me, model, Rachel, Erica, Sarah, Nicole, Marie, June, Jean, Kate, Lindsey, Leanne after the show. What a success! It went very smoothly much thanks to photographer Taryn Rosenberg and my new intern Alice Dunoyer, here all the way from France. Unfortunately we didn’t take any good photos of the two of us, so those will have to wait until the next show. Thanks ladies! (photo credit- Taryn Rosenberg)
